Book of Hades, Act II. Volume 5: The Angel of Earth, Uriel

In Heaven, it turns out Dobiel had hired an angel to go in his stead to retrieve the casket, so he is still alive. Of the candidate Raziel, Sevy says, “I feel a strange chi. What an interesting pet you [Rosiel] have there…” Sevy, with his “cold blue eyes” (pg.19) goes to see Zaphikel. “The angel army,” Sevy says, “is not united. The Great Four elemental angels” are mentioned as not being a part of the current political goings-on: The angel of Fire, Michael; the angel of Water, Jibril; the angel of Wind, Raphael, and the angel of Earth, Uriel. Sevy continues, “They say the seven great angels have gone bad, including you.” He lists the current problems plaguing the elemental angels. Michael is Heaven’s #1 problem child, Raphael is too busy being a womanizer, Jibril is in a catatonic state, and Uriel is missing in a self-imposed banishment, due to his love for Alexiel and the guilt over “what he did resulted in helping send [her] to Hell.” Sevy ends his palaver with Zaphikel by telling him to quit sneaking around or he will have his head.

Hades: Kato and Setsuna reach the lake Hvergelmir. A robot named Doll with black hair and a Sara-face activates the mask still on Kato. Through the whole of their travels it has been sucking up bad chi in Hades and it will combine with Kato’s own rage, hate and pain so Doll can overtake Setsuna’s power and kill them both. After a struggle Kato is able to fight against the mask and stabs himself with a cross-rod walking stick he has been carrying. Once the mask is attached, the victim is completely absorbed by it and dies, so he did this to save Setsuna. Setsuna gets so angry and upset at Kato’s apparently needless death, Uriel feels compelled to make an appearance. Setsuna demands to see Sara, but Uriel will not give up that information without a fight. He stabs Uriel with a piece of the mask that has broken off of Kato and wins the fight; he looks up and says, “Oh…Alexiel?” At this point, Setsuna has been in Hades for five days.

He tells Setsuna that Doll is actually made of fibrous plants and wound “like a watch”, but contains the soul of a wandering angel (Kaori-san: “Doll is the soul of Kirie.”) Sara was in the Red Room in his home but it was taken by a man who originally had removed her soul from Enra-ô’s soul crucible and brought to Uriel. She has left for Shikouten, a part of Heaven. Turns out it was Zaphikel who has stolen Sara to Heaven. We learn that during the “battle between Earth and the Heavens, he was a general.” Uriel also tells Setsuna that Kato’s soul is actually still contained in the cross-rod and he can be saved by Setsuna entering the spirit world and bringing him back. He must give him one of his angel wings, since Alexiel has the positive life-energy, unlike Rosiel. Because of this, Kato will then share Alexiel/Setsuna’s cursed karma. For Setsuna there is no option. As he goes to Kato, Uriel shouts, “Thanks to the curse I’ve now cast on you with my voice you will die bloodily and horribly, Alexiel!!” Then he mutters to himself, “What am I doing? Why am I killing Alexiel? I’m weak…I hope he’s able to save his friend…”

Kato’s real name is Yue. His (not biological) father beats him. His half-sister, Sae, is five years his senior. He is always so angry he smashes a music box that is precious to Sae. The memories of childhood are chaining him to rage and helplessness. Setsuna frees him from the chains and shows him that Sae repaired the music box and has kept it to this day. He feeds him some fruit, representing his wing. Kato can now choose to become Setsuna’s guardian spirit or “go to Eden to be reborn.” He chooses to guard Setsuna. They return to Uriel who explains his story. He is unhappy because originally he lived in Heaven, but ran to Hell because he was ridiculed for having black wings and being the angel of Death. He prefers Nature and animals but was given the title of Executioner when the war broke out, as the guardian of Hell. The Mask he currently wears helped him deal with killing so many but it overpowered his own soul. “Raphael hated me for injuring so many. But…Michael appreciated my anger.” He tells Setsuna, when talking to Michael, “Never mention his brother or his height.” Zaphikel helped Uriel hide in Hell, so he feels indebted to him, thus why he allowed him to bring Sara there. Also he had cut off his own head, severing his vocal chords (but can “speak” to others by his Language Power Spell ability.) He did this because it was he who cursed Alexiel originally. Sara had broken this curse by allowing herself to die in Setsuna’s place. Uriel had cursed Alexiel because he knew she would never love him the same way he loved her. He feels so bad about causing so much pain to others he begs Alexiel/Setsuna to Judge him by the “Flames of the Eternal Gehenna of Purgatory.” Setsuna refuses and wants to know more of the story; he wants to know who Alexiel loved so she could not love Uriel. Uriel says, “The one…person an angel must never love…”

Heaven: Rosiel has orphaned angel children brought to him to feed Katan. One can read minds and appears to befriend him. Her name is Teiaiel, also called Tiara. She tells Rosiel that she and Katan are leaving to a better place of white and flowers. Rosiel menaces towards her but Katan’s tentacles slither out and protect her. Rosiel has a fit: “You think I give a damn? Leave and die like a dog!” and storms out. Sevy tells Dobiel he has one more chance to kill Rosiel or it is he who will end up dead.
